Wiang Sun

Short Hook

Muay Chaiya doesn't have a long hook as in other forms of fighting. This is probably because of the relative slowness of the technique, and the way that it leaves itself wide open to counter along the center line (note how many of the 4Bs work agains the hook). By keeping the hook short and tight, Wiang Sun is safer to use and is very crisp and powerful. Another movement that uses Phlik Liam to gain power, Wiang Sun uses simple body mechanics to get the most out of very small movements and make it possible for both front and rear Wiang Sun's to be a powerful weapon.

Execution

From the Tha Kru - left stance.
  1. Lift up the left elbow and fist, so that they are level with your shoulder.
  2. You right fist comes up to protect your right temple.
  3. Phlik Liam to the right, driving your left arm around from the body.
  4. Stop, just past your target (or past the center line) - remember to strike through the target.
This should be practiced so that it can be executed on demand as a single sharp punch. You can use the same method for striking with the front hand, although you may need to draw it back slightly.

Fist orientation

When throwing hooks, some people like to have the palm facing down, whilst others prefer the palm facing towards you (top of knuckles on the outside) because of the worry of hitting with the wrong part of the hand and causing damage to yourself, not just your opponent. This danger is mainly apparent in long hooks, so Wiang Sun shouldn't cause this problem, but it is worth playing with both ways to see which variation suits you and feels most comfortable.
