Yang Saam Khum Stage 2: Phan Mut

Three Treasure Step

Stage 2: Phan Mut

Before attempting this, you should already be comfortable in the Tha Kru, and be able to Phan Mut easily.

Moving forwards

Start in left stance and guard.
  1. Lift you right knee to waist height pointing at 45°.
  2. Phan Mut, using the natural torque in your shoulders to help turn your body anti-clockwise 90°, making sure that your knee now points directly forward. (see below on this point)
  3. Put your right foot down into right stance - it should be parrallel to you left foot, both of which should be 45° to the front, and your arms should be in right guard.
  4. Now repeat for the opposite side.

Moving Backwards

Start in left stance
  1. Lift your left knee to waist level, pointing straight forward.
  2. Phan Mut backwards, using the natural torque in your shoulders to help turn you body 90° anti-clockwise. The knee should end at 45° to the front, remember to keep the knee up.
  3. Put your left foot down into right stance - it should be parrallel to you right foot, both of which should be 45° to the front, and your arms should be in right guard.
  4. Now repeat for the opposite side.

Key points

  • The Phan Mut should help you use your shoulders to rotate the body.
  • Point the knee directly forward inline with your hip.
  • Keep looking forwards at your opponent (or a point in the distance)
  • Keep at the same level throughout the move.
  • Turn on the ball of your foot, using your heel as a brake to stop the rotation.
  • Remember to Phan Mut backwards when you're moving back.

Common mistakes

  • Don't swing the knee to turn the body.
  • Don't turn on the heel of your foot.
  • Don't bob up and down.
