Yang Saam Khum Stage 4: Full Phan Mut
Before attempting this, you should already be comfortable in the Tha Kru, and be able to Phan Mut easily.Moving forwards
Start in left stance and guard.- Phan Mut raising your knee (the knee should pass under not around), using the natural torque in your shoulders to help turn your body anti-clockwise 90°, making sure that your knee now points directly forward.
- Phan Mut two more times, you should start and end in right guard.
- Put your right foot down into right stance - it should be parrallel to you left foot, both of which should be 45° to the front, and your arms should be in right guard.
- Now repeat for the opposite side.
Moving Backwards
Start in left stance- Lift your left knee to waist level, pointing straight forward.
- Phan Mut backwards two times, you should start and end in left guard.
- Phan Mut backwards, using the natural torque in your shoulders to help turn you body 90° anti-clockwise. The knee should end at 45° to the front, remember to keep the knee up.
- Put your left foot down into right stance - it should be parrallel to you right foot, both of which should be 45° to the front, and your arms should be in right guard.
- Now repeat for the opposite side.
Key points
- The Phan Mut should help you use your shoulders to rotate the body.
- Point the knee directly forward inline with your hip.
- Keep looking forwards at your opponent (or a point in the distance)
- Keep at the same level throughout the move.
- Turn on the ball of your foot, using your heel as a brake to stop the rotation.
- Remember to Phan Mut backwards when you're moving back.
- For speed, push from the toes of your back foot.
Common mistakes
- Don't swing the knee to turn the body.
- Don't turn on the heel of your foot.
- Don't bob up and down.
- Don't rush with the step or Phan Mut!
