Defense Training
Sparring is great for reactions, but quite often, you loose focus and forget exactly what you where training for. The problem is that when you're thinking about attacking and defending at the same time, it's hard to do either correctly. So it's sometimes useful to know how to simplify things so that you can focus on exactly what you need to get the right results.
Len Bong Gan Tua (Play self defense) is a great variation on standard sparring. Instead of having both partners attacking each other, pick roles. One attacks whilst the other defends, little else changes. This gives both the chance to focus on a specific task.
The attacker can focus on ways of attacking and breaking down the other's defence, whilst the defender gets to work on blocks, parries, avoidance and footwork.
Key points
- Agree on the terms first. Just punches? Just kicks? Knees? Talk about what needs to be practiced and worked on. Help each other work out weaknesses in each other's styles.
- If working on technique and strategy use shorter rounds so that you get breaks to think about and change tactics/goals.
- Use longer rounds if you want to work on stamina and functioning whilst exhausted.
- The attack should help the defender improve. If the defender cannot block a combination, repeat it until they figure it out. Then revisit it later in the round.
- The defender should have clear goals of what techniques they want to improve.
- Remember, be confident not scared. Now is the time to experiment and try things out. Better make a mistake with a friend with gloves on, than when defending yourself in real life.
