Ta Lawg

Open Guard

Where as the standard Tha Kru guard aims to draw the opponent's strikes over the top arm, Tha Lawg is an open guard that aims to draw the opponent's strikes down the center line, where they can easily countered by such moves as Bat. There are several Look Mai moves that utilise Bat as the initiating parry, and so need to use Tha Lawg to set the move up correctly. The advantage of Tha Lawg is that you are now able to use both front and rear hands to Bat, where as from the Tha Kru, only the rear hand Bat is convenient. Execution
  1. Stand with the body, legs and feet in the normal stance.
  2. Hold the arms up with fists at brow height, the front hand further forward than the rear, with fore arms vertical and palms facing in.
Experiment Play with this guard to see what moves and combinations work well from it, for example:
  1. Bat Na, Wiang Kaeng Na (same time)
  2. Bat Na, Wiang Kaeng Lang (what Look Mai is this?)
  3. Bat, Faad Sun Kaen
